Quests

Sixteen quests wait beneath the Abbey of Saint Veyra. Each run switches five of them off, so you meet eleven.

How quests work #

A quest starts when a townsperson asks for help, when you read a book in the dungeon, when you bring an item home, or when a monster stops to talk instead of fighting. The last quest begins when Vossarin dies. The quest log keeps a journal line for every active quest. The line changes as you make progress, and finished quests move to the end of the log.

The people of Hollowmere have something to say about almost every active quest. Their Talk menu lists those quests next to the day's gossip.

A quest's boss, books and items only appear in runs where that quest is switched on.

Quests in each run #

When a run begins, the game switches off one quest from each of these five groups, so a run holds eleven of the sixteen. The Ossuary, The Betrayer and The Unmaker are always on.

Desecrated Abbey, depths 1 to 4 #

The Gravedigger

The Gravedigger #

Desecrated Abbey · depth 2

A dying watchman warned of the Gravedigger, the abbey's old sexton, who slaughters the living on the second depth.
Where
Depth 2
Goal
Kill the Gravedigger on depth 2.
Starts
The Dying Watchman by the abbey door tells you of the Gravedigger.
Given by
Dying Watchman
Boss
The Gravedigger
Reward
The Gravedigger's Cleaver, dropped by the Gravedigger.
In a run
One of this quest, The Stolen Sign or Mewlik's Bargain is switched off in each run.
Solution
  1. At the start of the run the Dying Watchman lies beside the abbey door. Talk to him. He gasps out his warning and dies.
  2. On depth 2, find a slaughter room behind a single door, hung with chains. The Gravedigger waits inside.
  3. Kill him. He drops The Gravedigger's Cleaver, and the quest is done.

You do not need the watchman. Killing the Gravedigger finishes the quest either way. Tostig has advice for the fight:

Big, slow, and he swings that cleaver like he is splitting wood. Do not trade blows with him in the open. Hold a doorway and make him come to you. I have seen ogres die that way.
Tainted Wellspring

Tainted Wellspring #

Desecrated Abbey · depth 2

Brother Ansel fears the town's water is poisoned at its source. Find the stair on the second depth and cleanse the spring beneath the abbey.
Where
Depth 2, then a stair down to the Tainted Wellspring
Goal
Kill every monster in the Tainted Wellspring.
Starts
Brother Ansel asks you to cleanse the town's spring after your first trip below.
Given by
Brother Ansel
Boss
None
Foes
Every monster in the Wellspring must die.
Reward
Ring of the Penitent from Brother Ansel.
In a run
Either this quest or The Hollow King is switched off in each run.
Solution
  1. Once you have been down to depth 1, talk to Brother Ansel. He fears the town's water is poisoned at its source.
  2. On depth 2, find the breach where the floor gave way, with four candles around a stair. It leads down to the Tainted Wellspring.
  3. Kill every monster in the Wellspring. When the last one dies the water clears, and the quest is done.
  4. Return to Ansel for the Ring of the Penitent.

You may enter the Wellspring before Ansel asks. Clearing it still counts, and he still pays.

The Hollow King

The Hollow King #

Desecrated Abbey · depth 3

Osric asked you to put King Aldemar to rest. The Hollow King rules a court of bones in his tomb beneath the third depth.
Where
Depth 3, then a stair down to the Tomb of the Hollow King
Goal
Kill the Hollow King in his tomb.
Starts
Osric the Innkeeper asks you to put King Aldemar to rest.
Given by
Osric the Innkeeper
Boss
The Hollow King
Foes
Skeletons fill the tomb.
Reward
Crown of the Hollow King, dropped by the Hollow King.
In a run
Either this quest or Tainted Wellspring is switched off in each run.
Solution
  1. Once you have been down to depth 2, talk to Osric the Innkeeper. He tells you of the mad king beneath the abbey.
  2. On depth 3, a pillared vestibule with a carpet runner leads to the stair down to the Tomb of the Hollow King.
  3. In the tomb, pull the lever in a side chapel. It opens the sealed treasury beside the throne hall, where a large chest holds three magic items or spell books.
  4. Kill the Hollow King on his throne. He drops the Crown of the Hollow King, and the quest is done.
  5. Tell Osric. He has thanks for you, but no further reward.

Entering the tomb before Osric asks starts the quest too.

Mewlik's Bargain

Mewlik's Bargain #

Desecrated Abbey · depth 4

Mewlik the Craven, a goat-headed beastman of the fourth depth, begged for his life and swore to repay you with a gift. See whether his word is worth anything.
Where
Depth 4
Goal
Hear out Mewlik, then deal with him.
Starts
Mewlik the Craven begs for his life on depth 4 and promises you a gift.
Boss
Mewlik the Craven
Reward
A random item on your second visit, rolled like a boss drop, and a magic mace when he dies.
In a run
One of this quest, The Gravedigger or The Stolen Sign is switched off in each run.
Solution
  1. Mewlik the Craven waits somewhere on depth 4. Click him to talk instead of attacking. He begs for mercy, and the quest begins.
  2. Walk away until he is out of sight, then come back and talk again. He hands over a gift, an item rolled like a boss drop.
  3. Leave and return once more. He says the better gift is not ready yet.
  4. Leave and return a last time. This gift is his blade, and he attacks. Kill him. He drops a magic mace, and the quest is done.

Attacking him at once skips the gift, but he still drops the mace.

The Stolen Sign

The Stolen Sign #

Desecrated Abbey · depth 4

Snivelgut's imps stole the sign of the Hanged Crow. Osric wants it back. Look for it on the fourth depth.
Where

Starts
Osric the Innkeeper wants the stolen sign of the Hanged Crow back.
Given by
Osric the Innkeeper
Boss
Snivelgut
Foes
Snivelgut's clan of Dark Ones, sealed in a hall behind him.
Reward
Mourner's Cowl from Osric the Innkeeper.
In a run
One of this quest, The Gravedigger or Mewlik's Bargain is switched off in each run.
Solution
  1. Once you have been down to depth 3, talk to Osric the Innkeeper. Imps tore down the sign of his inn.
  2. On depth 4, Snivelgut waits in an antechamber between two sealed rooms. Click him to talk. He offers a deal: the sign sits in a warded chest his imps cannot open, and he unseals the closet that holds it.
  3. Open the large chest in the closet and take the Inn Signboard.
  4. Give the sign to Osric. He hangs it back up and gives you the Mourner's Cowl. The next time you visit depth 4, the sealed hall stands open and Snivelgut's clan attacks.

You can give the sign to Snivelgut instead. That also ends the quest, but there is no reward and the whole clan attacks at once. Do not kill Snivelgut before he has spoken. The chest stays sealed until he has, and the quest can no longer be finished.

Catacombs, depths 5 to 8 #

The Fallen Star

The Fallen Star #

Catacombs · depth 5

Tostig the Smith wants the Fallen Starstone, a cold stone from the sky that the monks hid in the catacombs beyond the fourth depth. He will forge it into a band that sees through darkness.

  2. On depth 5, the Fallen Starstone rests on a stand in a small pillared alcove. Take it.
  3. Bring it to Tostig. He forges the Band of the Fallen Star on the spot.

  2. Set the heartstone on a pedestal. A second stone appears next to an empty pedestal. Set it, then the third.
  3. When the third stone is in place the vault opens. Pick up the Mantle of the Last Paladin to finish the quest.
The Ossuary

The Ossuary #

Catacombs · depth 6

The Ossuary Codex on the sixth depth spoke the word that unseals the Ossuary. The stair below now lies open.

In a run
Every run
Solution
  1. On depth 6, find a chapel strewn with bones. The Ossuary Codex stands before a sealed wall. Read it, and the wall opens on the stair down to the Ossuary.
  2. Inside, follow the ring corridor to the reliquary at the centre and read the Moldering Grimoire.
  3. It teaches you Guardian, or raises it one level up to 15, and a Guardian appears near the book at once. The quest is done.
  4. A long crawl from one of the bone halls leads to a hidden treasure vault. Its large chest holds three magic items or spell books.
The Sightless Halls

The Sightless Halls #

Catacombs · depth 7

The Tome of the Sightless, found on the seventh depth, told of the halls where the abbey walled its penitents in darkness. The Eye of the Sightless lies at their heart.

  2. The halls are a maze of pillars haunted by Illusion Weavers. Make your way to the spot farthest from their entrance.
  3. Pick up the Eye of the Sightless. The quest is done.

The amulet only appears once the tome has been read.

The Mad Archivist

The Mad Archivist #

  1. On depth 8, find a long library hall with bookcases set into its walls. Talk to Orzath. He gives you a random spell book and tells you to leave.
  2. Walk out of sight and come back, or take a book from his bookcase. Either way he flies into a rage and attacks.
  3. Kill him to finish the quest. The bookcase holds a spell book of its own.

Weeping Caves, depths 9 to 12 #

Rotcap

Rotcap #

Weeping Caves · depth 9

In a run
One of this quest, The Mad Archivist or The Anvil of Embers is switched off in each run.
Solution
  1. On depth 9, a fungal grotto with two pools hides the Tome of Rot on a mound of rubble. Take it to Sabine the Witch.
  2. She sends you back for a Rotcap. Harvest the Rotcap Patch in the same grotto. It refuses you until she has read the tome.
  3. Give the Rotcap Mushroom to Sabine. Her brew needs a second ingredient, and Brother Ansel has asked for a demon's brain.
  4. The next ordinary monster to die, anywhere, drops a Festering Brain. Bring it to Ansel. He brews the Elixir of the Grave and sets it at his feet.
  5. Show the elixir to Sabine. She lets you keep it, and the quest is done. Only now can you drink it.

  2. On depth 10, the Anvil of Embers lies on an island in a lava lake, reached by a narrow winding causeway. Take it.
  3. Bring it to Tostig. He forges the Emberwrought Edge.

Killing him finishes the quest even if you never found the codex.

  3. Bring it back to Ser Calden. He leaves you his helm, Iron Penance, and finds his rest. The quest is done.

Ser Calden never attacks. If you kill him, his helm is lost and the quest can no longer be finished.

  2. Bring the staff to Elder Enoch. He names the Betrayer.
  3. Return to depth 15. A red portal now burns on the pentagram. Step in to reach Vossarin's Sanctum.
  4. Walk up to Vossarin. He preaches, then his sanctum opens, and so do the side chapels where Sister Mauvreth and Sister Kesh wait.
  5. Kill Vossarin. The quest is done. A red portal opens back to depth 15, and the stairs down to depth 16 appear on that level.
  6. Tell Enoch, and he records the last quest. You may go down without him.
